Together with three other authors, René Smits wrote an article on corporate social responsibility and compliance with law and regulations, with an emphasis on the financial sector. This article, published in Dutch in a monthly of the Dutch banking and insurance sector Bank- en Effectenbedrijf (Banking and Securities Business), argues for a cultural paradigm shift towards compliance from the top, the use of insights from the behavourial sciences in the application of the compliance function and independent external assessment of such compliance, possibly leading to a regulatory dividend, i.e. a forgiving stance from the supervisors if things go wrong in spite of this culture. The authors formulated tenets on the causes and solutions for the current crisis of confidence resulting from the credit crunch and its repercussions on the economy. An English translation has been submitted for publication. Hein Blocks, Peter Cornet, Fred von Dewall and René Smits constitute a think-tank of former supervisors and bankers on compliance and CSR issues in the financial sector: Responsible Boards®.
